CE expresses deep sorrow over Tung Chee Hwa's passing

MACAU, September 9 - The Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, on behalf of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government and in his personal capacity, expressed profound grief over the death of former Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, who passed away in Hong Kong on Tuesday (8 September). Mr Sam also extended his heartfelt condolences to Mr Tung’s family.

Mr Tung was an outstanding contributor to the implementation of the “One country, two systems” principle, a renowned patriot, and a distinguished social leader, Mr Sam noted. As Vice-Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee – from the 10th to 13th terms – and as the first- and second-term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Tung made significant contributions to Hong Kong’s smooth return to the motherland, ensuring its stable transition, and the successful implementation of the “One country, two systems” principle.

Mr Sam said Mr Tung had steadfastly supported the country’s reform, opening up, and modernisation, while tirelessly promoting national development and the “One country, two systems” principle. He also played a vital role in strengthening exchanges between China and countries around the world.

The Chief Executive noted that Mr Tung had long been dedicated to fostering closer ties and mutual development between Hong Kong and Macao. He actively supported the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the integration of both SARs into overall national development. Having visited Macao on numerous occasions to attend key events, Mr Tung made invaluable contributions to deepening cooperation between the two SARs,  promoting love for the country, Hong Kong and Macao.

Describing Mr Tung as an inspiring role model for future generations, Mr Sam said his remarkable achievements and noble character would always be remembered. Building on Mr Tung’s legacy, the MSAR Government will continue working closely with Hong Kong to ensure the steady and enduring practice of the “One country, two systems” principle, jointly promote regional prosperity and stability, and contribute to national rejuvenation.
